What Are Solar Arc Directions?
Solar arc is a directing technique: you take the entire natal chart and move every planet and point forward by a single amount — the solar arc. That arc is the distance the Sun has travelled by secondary progression, which works out to roughly one degree for every year of life.
So at age 30, the whole chart has advanced about 30°. Nothing changes its relationship to the other directed points — the pattern stays intact — but the directed chart forms brand-new aspects to the natal chart. Those contacts are where the timing lives.
Why About One Degree a Year?
In secondary progressions, one day after birth stands for one year of life. In that first symbolic “day,” the Sun moves a little under one degree on average — so the solar arc grows by about 1° per year. Add that arc to every natal placement and you have the directed chart for any age.
Because the rate is so steady, you can estimate quickly: a directed planet 5° away from an exact aspect is roughly five years from perfecting it. That simple arithmetic is a large part of why the technique is trusted for forecasting.
How to Read a Solar Arc Hit
1. Calculate the arc
Find the solar arc (the progressed Sun’s distance from the natal Sun, close to the person’s age) and add it to every natal degree.
2. Look for directed-to-natal contacts
Watch for a directed planet or angle reaching an exact aspect to a natal point — conjunctions and hard aspects are the loudest. Keep the orb tight, ideally within 1°.
3. Read it as a timed theme
The two bodies involved describe the nature of the event; the year it perfects tells you when. Directed angles and directed Sun or Moon contacts are especially significant.
